The Crest Cherel Museum

The known history of this castle begins in 1248 with a transaction made by Count Boniface of Savoy who donated it to the Becket family of Holland with the request that the coats of arms of the two families be merged (Stag's Head and Savoy Cross). This place pompously called Castle is only a fortified house which completed a defensive system around Ugine. Its location dominated the so-called "Imperial" road from Turin to Geneva via Conflans, Pallud, Ugine, Héry-sur-Ugine and Saint Gervais. The Dutch family, which became the Crestcherel family, continued its ascension until the 16th century. In 1680 the last descendant of Crestcherel bequeathed all her property to an ally of the family: Noble François de Lescheraine. From then on, the castle lost its importance and gradually fell into ruin; the Geny family bought it in 1740 when it was in a very bad state. A fire destroyed it in 1775. Modifications were made by the Geny family who sold it to the town of Ugine in 1921 for 100,000 francs. In 1984, the castle was restored by the municipality and became the ideal place to house the collections of our museum. More than 1500 objects have been collected, restored and displayed by the volunteers of the museum section of the Amicale Laïque d'Ugine. The volunteers continue to keep the museum alive.
